Quickly Switching Your Cat or Dog’s Food Due to a Pet Food Recall

When your brand of pet food is recalled you have to quickly take your pet off that food, unlike the gradual process of transitioning your pet from one food to another. As your dog’s and cat’s digestive system is used to a specific formula of food, you have to take precautionary steps to ensure a smooth, quick transition.

Steps to Take When Switching Pet Food Immediately:

Find a Similar Formula

Choose a food that closely matches your pet’s previous food formula. For instance, if your pet was on a lamb and rice diet, switch to a pet food that uses lamb and rice in the formula. The new food should be mixed with one of the following to ease the switch on your pet’s digestive system.

Mix With Chicken & Rice

Make your own mixture of 20% chicken and 80% rice. Cut chicken breast meat into bite-sized pieces and cook. Then cook the rice and mix it with the cooked chicken. Use this mixture in combination with the new food you are transitioning your pet to.

Pumpkin

Purchase canned pumpkin—not pie mix—and mix with the new pet food. The fiber content in pumpkin is very effective in the treatment and maintenance of digestive health for pets and can ease the quick transition in foods. Mixing a small amount of pumpkin with your pet’s new food (1/4 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon, depending on the pet’s weight) can help to ensure your dog or car doesn’t experience a case of diarrhea. In fact, often a veterinarian will prescribe pumpkin as part of the treatment for intestinal malady, as well as simply a healthful dietary supplement.

Plain Yogurt

The active cultures in yogurt will repopulate your pet’s digestive system with healthy and soothing bacterial flora. Mix a small amount of plain yogurt with your pet’s new food to ease in the transition on his or her digestive system.

Diamond Pet Food Recall

Diamond Pet Foods has voluntarily recalled some brands of dry dog and cat food that it manufactured in its Gaston, S.C. facility between December 9, 2011 and April 7, 2012 due to potential Salmonella contamination. The brands that were recalled on May 4 have not tested positive for Salmonella. The company is recalling certain batches of these brands, however, as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety and well-being of customers and their pets. Consumers should check this website for the production codes and best-before dates on the bags of recalled food, and discontinue feeding it.

To learn whether or not the brand of dog or cat food you use is included in the recall, please select it from the list below. Please note: we have issued CORRECTED production codes for all the brands below except for Apex. Each brand’s page will have the CORRECTED production codes.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – May 8, 2012 – Solid Gold Health Products for Pets, Inc., El Cajon, California, announced a voluntary recall of one batch of WolfCub Large Breed Puppy Food and one batch of Solid Gold WolfKing Large Breed Adult Dog, both with a Best Before date of December 30, 2012, and an “X” in the 11th digit of the date code.

Solid Gold is voluntarily recalling the products below, distributed in the United States and Canada. This voluntary recall is being done out of an abundance of caution as these products were produced at the facility that has been linked to recent recalls of Diamond brand pet foods due to potential Salmonella contamination.

Pets with Salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If left untreated, pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Individuals handling dry pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product. People who believe they may have been exposed to Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. According to the Centers for Disease Control, people who are more likely to be affected by Salmonella include infants, children younger than 5 years old, organ transplant patients, people with HIV/AIDS and people receiving treatment for cancer.

Mantrailing je novou metódou kriminalistickej taktiky, ktorá s čoraz väčšou mierou nachádza uplatnenie v činnostiach policajno-bezpečnostných subjektov v zahraničí, najmä v súvislosti s jej efektívnym využitím v boji proti zločinu a v pátraní po hľadaných a nezvestných osobách pomocou služobných psov. Uvedená téma konferencie aktuálne súvisí s rozvojom študijného predmetu Policajná kynológia a hipológia v študijnom programe Bezpečnostnoprávna ochrana osôb a majetku.

Podujatie sa uskutoční v priestoroch Strednej odbornej školy Policajného zboru v Bratislave – v Devínskej Novej Vsi, v školiacom centre oddelenia policajných pridelencov a mierových misií úradu medzinárodnej policajnej spolupráce Prezídia Policajného zboru. Jeho súčasťou bude medzinárodný workshop K-9 Mantrailing Course so zameraním na praktické využitie a výcvik plemena bloodhound, na ktorý prijali pozvanie renomovaní lektori z USA a z Nemecka.

Mantrailing is a new method of criminalistics tactics that and increasingly finds application in the activities of police-security entities abroad, particularly in relation to its effective use in the fight against crime and the search for wanted and missing persons with service dogs. The current theme of the conference related to the development of the study subject and Police cynology hipológia in the study program Bezpečnostnoprávna protection of persons and property.

The event was held at the Central Police training school in Bratislava – in Ves, in the center for the police department officer and peacekeeping missions of the International Police Cooperation of the Presidium of the Police Force. The international workshop will include K-9 Mantrailing Course focusing on practical application and training breed bloodhound, who accepted the invitation of renowned lecturers from the USA and Germany.

APDW Honors Stonehenge, Arthur Winners

On Sunday — the day before The Garden — the APDW will reveal and pay tribute to the winners of the Arthur Awards. Only two Awards are revealed beforehand, the highly sought after Stonehenge Award and the prestigious Arthur J. Haggerty Award. This year we have two very worthy recipients of these awards and they will be honored at the Awards Luncheon: David Frei and Jeff Schettler, respectively.

David Frei is this year’s recipient of The Stonehenge Award, presented annually to an individual who has contributed significantly to the sport of purebred dogs. David joins past “Stonehenges”: Anne Rogers Clark (2007), Edd Bivin (2008), Bo Bengtson (2009), Patti Strand (2010) and Damara Bolte,(2011).

APDW director Billy Gorodner will introduce the well known ‘Voice of Westminster”, longtime breeder, author, philanthropist and respected ambassador to the purebred dog. President Patricia Enright will present David with the coveted “5th Millennial Edition of the Stonehenge Watch(tm)”, an internationally known unique pocket watch that has been featured at various prestigious Art Conferences and media venues throughout England and the U.S.. Known as the official watch of Stonehenge, the original is on display at the Salisbury Museum in England. APDW has embraced this watch as our Stonehenge Trophy. The design incorporates the oldest and newest way to tell time, paralleling the club’s desire to encompass writers who move forward in their skills, keeping their craft fresh, new and exciting, at the same time preserving the nuances and foundations of writers of old, raising the bar to a craft that needs to stand the test of time. The Stonehenge Award is representative of “Stonehenge”, the nome de plume of John Henry Walsh, noted premier writer of the purebred in the mid 1800′s, whose written works on breeding, rearing, training, coursing & fielding, to medical diseases and health of the purebred, has etched a foundation of events we use today in our sport. His works paved the way for writers to challenge their pen in the very sport that grew during that time to what we know today as the sport of purebred dogs.

The Stonehenge Watch is a token of appreciation for its recipient’s contribution to dogdom. In addition, APDW also makes a donation in the winner’s name to Take the Lead.

Our Arthur J. Haggerty Winner this year is also going to be our Key-Note Speaker, noted Trainer, Jeff Schettler. The Haggerty Award is given to one who has made outstanding contributions in the field by way of, but not limited to, education, training, or taking part in new advances that increase the worth of the canine-human bond. Jeff has an extensive history and vast experiences in pioneering methods used in elite trailing and training techniques for police and SAR dogs, including K-9 training for search and rescue, tracking, service dog training, etc. He has been the trainer for various high profile organizations of service and rescue dogs, mentor, contributor and advisor for many media programs including Mythbusters, CNN, & Discovery, to name a few. Noted dog trainer, Babette Haggerty, APDW Director and daughter of the late “Captian” Arthur J. Haggerty, will introduce Jeff and present him with the beautiful Haggerty Trophy specially designed by DannyQuest in the image of her father’s beloved German Shepherds.

Both the Stonehenge and The Haggerty presentation will be a highlight of the Annual APDW Arthur Awards Luncheon at Sardi’s, 234 West 44th Street, at 11 am Sunday, February 12th. It is there that we will also find out the winners of the various categories in writing, media and visual arts in our competition that is making its mark to be the most prestigious awards in the world of the purebred dog.
